Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before you download Kalv.
Is Kalv for me
Why Kalv, and not a standard nutrition tracker?
A standard tracker was written for someone losing ten pounds by summer: one number, set once, and the same number whether you sat at a desk or sparred four times that week.
Someone who spars, rolls or wrestles every week is not that person. How much you should eat depends on your weight, how many sessions you put in and where you’re taking the weight — down to a limit, up a class, or holding it — and it changes when any of those change.
Kalv is built on exactly those three, and re-sets the day every morning from your scale. When the phase moves, the plan moves with it, and the detail underneath stays — so the next block starts from what actually happened in the last one.
Which sports does Kalv cover?
Six — MMA, boxing, muay thai, kickboxing, wrestling and BJJ. Anything else, you set your own limit by hand and the rest of the app works the same.
I fight amateur. Do I really need Kalv?
Most people who train have a scale and whatever they remember from last time. That works until the weight has to move and the sessions can’t get lighter.
Everything you’re working on runs through what you eat — the weight, the energy in the third round, what you recover between two sessions. Kalv covers that side of it. All year, every year, not just the weeks before a fight.
I’ve never cut weight before. Is Kalv where I should start?
Yes, and it’s a good place to start. You get a daily weight to hit and a rate that stays under one percent a week, whether it’s your first cut or your tenth.
How it works
Does Kalv tell me what to eat, or just count it?
It counts. Kalv gives you your daily targets — calories and macros — and you’re free to hit them however you like.
No meal plans, no banned foods. If you eat out or you’re travelling, just log what you had and Kalv tells you where that leaves you for the rest of the day.
How precise is Kalv?
The scan lands around 90% on average — good light, plate in frame. It’s a faster way to log, not a lab.
That last 10% is exactly why every value stays yours: grams, calories, each macro, editable in two seconds or typed by hand from the start.
Do I need anything besides my phone?
Your phone is enough. The scan reads the plate and every value stays editable, so you can correct anything that looks off.
If you want to be accurate to the gram, a basic kitchen scale does the job — the kind you’ll find in any supermarket.
What if my fight date moves, or I don’t have one yet?
Change it whenever you need to and Kalv redraws the plan around the new date. By the way, the date is optional: Kalv is built to track your nutrition all year, not only in the weeks before a fight.
Trust and price
Where do your weight classes come from?
Kalv takes them from each federation’s official table. If you’re not sure which one you fall into, see every weight class here.
Why should I trust these numbers?
The 1%-a-week ceiling is not a house rule. Garthe and colleagues put twenty-four elite athletes on 0.7 or 1.4 per cent of body weight a week in 2011, both groups lifting throughout: total weight came off the two the same, but lean mass rose on the slow rate and did not move on the fast one. Cut quickly and the strength you spent months building stops climbing. Kalv will not draw a faster line, even if you ask it to.
And the water cut is not in the app, on purpose. That one needs someone standing next to you.
What does Kalv cost?
The first three days are free. After that, the premium features run on a subscription you buy inside the app — you see the price on the screen before anything is charged.
Billed through Apple. Cancel in two taps.
The other cost is your time. A plate takes about ten seconds to scan, or a couple of minutes if you’d rather type it out. That’s all the app asks of your day.
